Do you have tons of leftover Halloween candy? Well, here’s the solution. During the Pack Meeting this Thursday, we will be collecting Halloween stockpiles of candy for donations to U.S. Troops. The Cub Scouts and Webelos will be writing letters and/or color pictures for our Troops overseas as the gathering activity this month. The delivery of the letters and candy will be facilitated through Operation Gratitude.

So please be sure to have your son bring candy to the meeting on Thursday if you would like your son to participate in this program.

Everyone is talking about the upcoming 2012 Pack 1800 Fall Family Campout! This is truly an event that you don’t want to miss. This is what it’s all about. If you’re new to Cub Scouting and camping, you may have several questions: What do we need to bring? Where do we sleep? What do we eat?

Hopefully this write-up will answer many of your questions. And, if you still have more, please just give me, Cubmaster David, a call, or ask another leader about our outdoor activities. We really want everyone to participate in this fun event.

When you Cub Scout Camp with Pack 1800, you’re responsible for bringing your own camping supplies. This includes a tent, sleeping bags, air mattress or pad, cooking equipment, food and drink, etc. Before you run out and spend hundreds of dollars on gear, ask your friends and family to see if you can borrow equipment. See if you like camping first, then buy. Also, there are some folks in our Pack that have accumulated extra camping equipment over the years who would be happy to help out a first-time camping family with a small tent or an extra sleeping bag or air mattress.

Remember… yes, we’re “roughing” it, but this is what we fondly call “car camping.” You’re 50 feet away from your car and take out and put back stuff in your trunk as needed. There is water and an electrical connection for a camper trailer hook-up at each campsite. You can bring an extension cord to power your electric griddles, air pumps for mattresses, coffee makers, or whatever you may need (remember, no TVs, games or electronics are permitted during campouts).

Also, when you Cub Scout Camp with Pack 1800, you also have the option to camp 1 or 2 nights, or not camp at all. That’s right! If you want to camp, we have already reserved several sites. Your family can camp both nights (Friday and Sat), or just one night (Sat). We typically like to have 4 families on one site. Families within dens typically try to camp together, but there’s no set rule.

The Pack has a special Saturday night meal planned for everyone there, but all other meals are planned on your own – they say that simple is best: cereal, breakfast bars, sandwiches, chips, bottled or canned drinks. Some dens even plan meals together.

The grand finale of every Pack Campout is the Saturday night Campfire ceremony. This is an outdoor show put on by the Scouts, the adult leaders, and you, too! Funny skits! Songs! It’s like a Pack Meeting with a big bonfire in the background!

Sounds great, but you still don’t want to camp? Okay, your family doesn’t have to spend the night at all. Just come Saturday morning. Brazos Bend is not that far. Pack your lunches, fill your cooler with ice and cold drinks, put some chairs in the trunk, grab some breakfast on the road, and come out early to spend the day with your Pack 1800 friends. Plan on staying for the Pack Dinner and participate in the Campfire ceremony, and then drive home Saturday night.

What do you do at a Cub Scout Campout? The day is full of activities! Here is the current working agenda for Saturday:

  • 8 am Flags and opening ceremony
  • 9-11 Fishing Derby – Hale Lake
  • 11-11:30 Travel back to sites/free time
  • 1130-12 Nature scavenger hunt
  • 12-1:30 Lunch
  • 130-2:30 Den meetings
  • 2:30-3:00 Free time/prepare for Xmas in the park
  • 3-5 Christmas program – This is the State Park’s program
  • 5-6 retire flag/free time/den time
  • 6-7 pm Pack 1800 Dinner
  • 7 pm Campfire program
  • 8:30 pm – Cracker barrel
  • 10 pm – Lights out
